Celebrating France-Southern Africa cooperation through launching Mapping biodiversity priorities - a key resource for any country implementing and monitoring the GBF
1- To share African experiences, applicable to any country, of how mapping biodiversity priorities can contribute to biodiversity-inclusive spatial planning, improve accessibility of biodiversity knowledge and help mainstream biodiversity into decision-making.
2- To launch the second edition of the guide Mapping biodiversity priorities: A practical approach to spatial biodiversity assessment and prioritisation to inform national policy, planning, decisions and action - a guide first published in 2016 and now updated for relevance to the Global Biodiversity Framework targets and indicators, and latest IUCN standards and tools, including the IUCN Global Ecosystem Typology, the IUCN Red List of Ecosystems, the IUCN Red List of Species, and Key Biodiversity Areas. Spatial data and mapping can provide multiple benefits for biodiversity policy, planning, decisions and action at a national level. The guide shows how it is possible to use a few foundational datasets to produce useful indicators of the state of biodiversity and maps that identify biodiversity priority areas. The products can be useful in a wide range of applications, from mainstreaming biodiversity to global reporting.
3- To inspire discussions about upscaling the processes described in the Mapping biodiversity priorities guide and being implemented by the SBAPP Regional Project to other countries and regions.
4- To celebrate collaborations between France and Southern Africa for biodiversity assessment and conservation capacity building, particularly the SBAPP Regional Project in South Africa, Namibia, Mozambique and Malawi and the South Africa – France partnership for biodiversity and marine conservation.""""
